2011 Prostate Cancer Doubles Shootout

Last Saturday 87 disc golfers competed in the 4th Annual FLHW ‘Prostate Cancer Doubles Shootout’. I would like to thank our Board members and volunteers who did a wonderful of job putting this event together.  The spirit of this event is always inspiring!!!

There were 5 teams from St. Louis, two from Marshall, MO, one each from Topeka and Wichita, KS as well as one from Lincoln, NE.  The rest of the players were from Kansas City and surrounding areas. Though the weather was chilly with an overcast sky the winds died down for round two and the afternoon was quite enjoyable!

Lunch as always included our infamous salmon burgers, and much more. We were entertained by a champion Frisbee dog, Towser and the players finished the break with a Ring of Fire filled with tons of prizes!
Due to my love for the sport, this might be my favorite event of the year. It also ranks up there because of the underling purpose of the event. Yes, it is great to raise some money for the cause, but more importantly, I appreciate the opportunity to address a group of men and women that are at or near the optimal age for starting to be concerned about Prostate Cancer and improving their health in general. At the end of the day, if one person gets tested or begins having conversations with their doctor about their health, then it’s mission accomplished!

Five thousand reasons to say thank you!

The events of this past weekend were absolutely exhausting! I wouldn’t however have it any other way based on the outcome!

We raised over $5,000 for advanced prostate cancer research!

On Friday night we held our second annual Friday Night in the Greenhouse event. It was a great time and not only did I run into some old friends, I met a few new ones as well. Words cannot express how grateful I am to the people at Suburban Lawn and Garden and specifically to the Stuecks. You are unbelievably generous with both your time and resources.

Saturday was our third annual Prostate Cancer Doubles Shootout, disc golf tournament. The event has grown each year and in 2010 we continued the trend. 42 teams registered for this years event. We had sponsorship from a regional micro-brewery, and the weather was perfection and the FLHW Board came through with another great lunch!

My day began at about 6:00am and I was out the door by 6:45 in order to get things started. I was well rested and still reeling in the events of the day before; the greenhouse and the fact I got another hole in one… details and an update to follow. It was a chilly 41 degrees as the golfers began to arrive, but as the crowd increased, so did the temperatures. We were able to get the first round started about twenty minutes late, but we had built a little flexibility into the schedule.

I was partnered with my friend and the co-tournament director Gary and we played with a few other friends. Our round started out normal; Par-Birdie-Par and as we approached the short forth hole we were greeted by the owner of the course and fellow FLHW board member Mark. These two, along with the five others I was playing with began to lightly jab at me regarding my hole-in-one on this very hole the day before. Cries of “Come on hot shot, let’s see it again” were never ending as I walked to the tee box. I grabbed the same disc, and let go what immediately felt like the exact same throw. The result?

Another ace! Same disc, same hole, two days in a row!!

This is my disc sitting in the basket on Friday

As I’ve shared with others, I was mobbed! I’ve never been high-fived, back slapped or hugged so much in my life! It was unbelievable!

It was a personal highlight for the day but the success of the event overall was even better! Once again I met many new people and hopefuly convinced a few to get tested for PCa. We raised a lot of money for the cause and enjoyed some awesome disc golf on a beautiful, private course.

I would be remiss if I did not close with thank you to the following:
Pete
Gary
The FLHW Board; Rich, Mark, Steve, Chris
Mary
Katie
Cathy
Kathy
Bill and Bo
All the players
Tallgrass Brewery
Innova
Gorilla Boy Bags
Avery Jenkins
Johnny’s Tavern
Llywelyn’s Pub
and all the others sponsors

Quite memorable

I heard this on television last night; “The things you do for yourself die with you. The things you do for others lives on forever”

I did paraphrase this, and although I searched for the original source, I could not locate it. However, it remains my unwritten mantra. Even before I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I was the type of person to jump in and help others without anticipation of reciprocal favors. This idea lives on in Faith, Love, Hope, Win. The foundation is not about helping David, it is and will remain about helping others battling this disease by supporting the research for better treatments and perhaps one day a cure for advanced prostate cancer.

Isn’t it sad that so many people in our society live with a mindset completely opposite, the old, “What’s in it for me?” approach to life. The gift of life is too short to live that way. I continue to believe I was put here for a reason and given prostate cancer in order to help others. “It’s not all about Me”, as I have said many times in the history of this blog.

I am looking forward to Friday and Saturday’s FLHW events. I know they will go well, but I always get nervous leading up to our events. Once again the weather is forecasted to cooperate. Saturday will be a chilly 42 when we get started in the morning, but perfectly sunny with temperatures climbing into the mid-sixties!

I walked the disc golf course yesterday with the owner and his wife. They are truly good, generous people. Even though I have played the course a dozen times I couldn’t help express my gratitude to them for the use of this piece of property. To repeat an earlier description; where the subdivisions end on the south end of Overland Park is where this property and the ‘country’ begins.

With that thought, I close by repeating the quote I started with because it applies to these people as well as to myself: “The things you do for yourself die with you. The things you do for others lives on forever”.

A hectic week ahead for FLHW

On Friday, May 7th, FLHW will be hosting our 2nd annual ‘FLHW Friday Night at the Greenhouse’ event. The owner of Suburban Lawns and Garden will be donating 10% of all sales between 5pm and 8pm, at the 105th and Roe store to FLHW. He also provides live music, beverages and light snacks. It is a very nice event and will be a fun night! It’s also the Friday before Mother’s Day, so a great time to pick up some flowers!

The following day is the 3rd annual ‘FLHW PC Doubles Shootout’. It will be played again at the beautiful Thornfield disc golf course, a privately held course in Stilwell, KS. This disc golf tournament will attract approximately ninety disc golfers for two eighteen hole rounds, lunch, a few beverages and prizes for the winning teams. As with the ball golf tournament, the day will run smoothly due to the help of the FLHW Board and the wonderful volunteers. This year we will be selling limited edition, commemorative discs. Even if you do not play disc golf, please consider buying one to help support the cause! Discs are $25 including shipping (domestic). Email me at ‘info at flhw.org’ if you are interested. We’ve already had some sales, which is great. There is a picture of the disc below. We appreciate everyone’s support! The picture on the front of the disc was taken at last year’s event.

Have a great week-end!

Over the weekend I finally found the time to pull together all of the pictures from our recent disc golf tournament. Funny how much more time I have when I don’t play disc golf!

It turns out I have over 1,800 pictures from the event!
Below is a link to the video. The video is approximately 380 of the best shots with a music
soundtrack to boot. It’s about 22 minutes long but well worth your time.

The statistics for the day are in the closing credits so you’ll have to watch the whole thing to find out how we did!

Caution – flying plastic!

This evening, twenty four hours later, I still find myself exhausted! However, without a doubt, it was worth every minute, every step, every throw!

Yesterday we held the 2nd Annual FLHW Disc Golf Tournament. Though the weather started off a little cool and breezy, by mid-day, the winds subsided, the clouds passed, and the sky was a clear blue with a warm sun shining down on us. The day ended up being absolutely perfect.

We had 78 disc golfers and were privileged to play on a private course, located on an unbelievable piece of property here in southern Johnson County, Kansas. The owner is a wonderful and extremely generous man to whom Mary and I owe much gratitude.

I’ll provide more details and many, many more pictures in a few days. We are very pleased that we raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $3,000. All of which will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) to support the research needed to develop improved treatments and a cure for advanced Prostate Cancer.

Mary and I would personally like to thank each of the Board members who generously dedicated their time to making this event a success, all of the sponsors, volunteers and players that shared in our mission for a cure. God bless all of you!

Fwd: There will be tears.

I have been in Orlando all week, away from Mary and Brad.

During this time and as I mentioned in my last entry, we lost a dear friend.

I haven’t really had the opportunity to reflect and let the memories flow or to take a minute to be, if nothing else, sad.

I sense that tonight, after Brad is asleep there will be tears.

Tomorrow will be crazy busy as Mary and I prepare for Saturday’s second annual FLHW disc golf tournament. At this point I would guess we will end up with close to 100 disc golfers. The weather is supposed to be ideal, the anticipation is unbearable at times. I look forward to the day and once again having the opportunity to promote the need for early detection and support of the research to find a cure for PC.

Pictures and a full update in a few days.

Spring and a few other things

This might finally be the week when we put winter behind us. I say that with some trepidation, not wanting to jinx things. I planted spinach about a month ago and it is finally making some real progress, however harvest and a fresh salad from the bounty are weeks away.

We played in a rain soaked disc golf tournament on Saturday and I hope to get out a few times this week and weekend. Additionally, plans are well under way for our second annual FLHW disc golf tournament on May 9th. Details are at http://www.flhw.org/2009discgolf.htm

Since returning from Houston, I’ve really been trying to take the doctor’s advice to just get on with it. We have been really wanting to get back to Florida and may try to plan a trip for when school gets out. I could use some sand between my toes!

My next appointment with Dr. V is next Monday and for once I am not real concerned. Well maybe just a little. There is potentially some good news on the horizon for those of us with advanced prostate cancer.

I’ve written about this new drug, Provenge, a number of times over the years. My first post on Provenge was on October 24, 2006. Next week the company is scheduled to announce the results of their Phase III trial and rumor has it, the news is good. What that means is, in the best case scenario, the drug may be available in the first quarter of 2010. Available and approved or paid for by insurance are two completely different things as well. It is still good news and apparently there may be more regarding other treatments in the months ahead. Again, nothing curative, simply drugs or treatments that may extend the life of those with advanced PCa.

Out like a lion….

With the beginning of Spring and the end of March came a nice little reminder from Mother Nature as to who’s in charge! We received a late season snow storm yesterday that delivered about 5 inches of snow on our house. It was very pretty to wake to this morning, but rather heavy to shovel from the driveway.

Tomorrow is my four week appointment with Dr. V, as well as a Lupron shot and Zometa infusion. I am rather concerned about my PSA, being that my sole treatment right now is Lupron. It has been two months since my last chemo treatment. Where did the time go?

Overall, I am still feeling very good. I worked out four mornings last week, I was able to shovel the driveway this morning and even played disc golf again yesterday morning before the snow arrived. I have been experiencing mild pain in both knees throughout the day. Nothing real bad, in fact I have yet to take Advil to deal with the pain. I’m not sure of the connection, but this all started after I weaned myself from the daily steroids I was taking until about two weeks ago. I was taking the prednisone during the chemo regimen. I had to slowly withdraw over two weeks. We definitely will discuss with Dr. V tomorrow.

At this point MD Anderson has received my records and we are expecting a call early this coming week to begin the scheduling process.

A few non-David health related updates:

On May 9th we will be holding the 2nd Annual FLHW Disc Golf Tournament. We were fortunate enough this year to gain access to one of Kansas City’s newest private courses. A wonderfully generous man built the course for the express purpose of providing non-profit foundations an alternative venue for fund raising events in Kansas City. I recently discovered that the course will also be used for this summer’s World Disc Golf Championship being held here in KC. We are hoping that this might attract a few more teams that are looking for ways to get on and practice before this summer’s major event.

The man who owns the property and course is the owner of Suburban Lawn and Garden. He does some unbelievably philanthropic things here in Kansas City. As we began to plan the disc golf event he extended an offer for a new program at the greenhouse and garden center at 135th and Wornall. Each Friday, for six consecutive weeks, a different charity will receive 10% of all sales between 5 and 8 pm. Also, during the week leading up to the event the charity will be able provide information about their charity to Suburban’s customers. FLHW has secured Friday, June 5th! We are very pleased that will give us yet another opportunity to promote the importance of early detection for prostate cancer and make men and women more aware of this disease that kills 28,000 men annually. More details regarding this event will be forthcoming as the date approaches.

Ramblings

I have nothing specific to report today, so here are some random things that come to mind.

Have you heard the new Darrius Rucker CD, “Learn to Live“? In case you don’t know, he is the lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish. The genre is supposedly country, but I would consider most of the songs more rock. Regardless, I still like the CD overall.

I started a new TV series via the iPod. Last week on Monday night after treatment I needed something new while I was awake all night. The show is “Brotherhood” and is currently in season three on Showtime. Since I can never start a new series in the middle I got season one from NetFlix. After four episodes it’s better than average but I’m still not sure. It’s really the story of Cain and Able. The good brother is the city councilman and bad brother a small time gangster, with a conscious.

We are deep in the throws of winter this week in Kansas City, overnight temperatures tonight well below zero. It is supposed to be short lived and rumor has it we might see the fifties by the weekend. Hmmmm, can you say disc golf?

The foundation, www.flhw.org has a few events that are coming up in the first half of 2009. On Fat Tuesday, February 24th, we will be having another Texas Hold ‘Em event. Details will be available soon. On Saturday May 9th we will be having our second annual disc golf tournament, again details will be available soon. We are also contemplating a dinner/wine tasting but have a long way to go with this possible event.

Finally, I am looking forward to Monday January 26th with trepidation. On one hand, it will be the end of chemo. On the other hand the ominous ‘what next’ lies ahead. God will guide us in our decision, but all decisions from this point on are compounded in their significance. We’ll see what happens when we get there…..
